KNOW YOUR NUMBERS
Blood Pressure Awareness Month February 2020
Community First is excited to announce its first annual “KNOW YOUR NUMBERS” blood pressure awareness campaign that aims to end high blood pressure in Hawaii. Knowing your numbers refers to everyone knowing their blood pressure numbers. The goal is to be as familiar with it as you are with your own height and weight.
Community First is a local non-profit organization founded by Barry Taniguchi that is dedicated to realizing a healthy community believes healthcare is caring for health and not just treating disease. A community that works together to accomplish a unified vision of “Our Island, Our Community, Our Health.”
This blood pressure campaign will educate our community about high blood pressure and hypertension. Both high blood pressure and hypertension puts you at risk for heart disease and stroke which are the leading causes of death in the United States and affects about 1/3 of our adult population. It is referred to as the silent killer as most people do not experience any symptoms or signs and half of those with high blood pressure are not aware of it.
We will be using all forms of media to promote and inform our community building to and throughout the month of February 2020. In addition, we will do educational outreach that includes free blood pressure screenings at worksites and community venues throughout East Hawaii.
We are working in partnership with many community organizations including East Hawaii IPA, American Heart Association, Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce, Kanoelehua Industrial Area Association, Japanese Chamber of Commerce, County of Hawaii, State of Hawaii, Hilo Medical Center, HawCC, UHH SON, KTA Pharmacy, HMSA, UHA and others.
